Wildlife
Stop along the Byway to catch a glimpse of Edisto’s wildlife. The EINSB cuts through miles of diverse natural habitat that supports a rich bio-diversity – a true nature lovers delight. Maritime forests and farm fields provide ideal shelter and food for songbirds like the colorful painted bunting, raptors like the bald eagle and red-shouldered hawk, and mammals like deer and bobcat. The ebbing and flooding tidal creeks with their wide expanses of saltmarsh grass function as a nursery where hundreds of acquatic species are born. This food chain attracts a rich assortment of wading and sea birds like the great blue heron and the snowy egret, turtles, alligators, fish, oysters, crabs and shrimp, and the fun-loving bottlenose dolphin. The Ocean is breeding and feeding ground for hundreds more species from tiny shellfish to loggerhead turtles to sharks and giant right whales to magnificent sea birds, like the pelican and the woodstork.
